The first new intellectual property developed by Bethesda Game Studios in 25 years, Starfield is a hotly anticipated AAA single player, action role playing game which takes place across the vastness of space. Originally scheduled for release in November of this year, the game has been delayed to an as yet unspecified date sometime in the first half of 2023. This space exploration game will have many of the typical Bethesda game hallmarks – a robust main story and side quests, elaborate character creation, and an extraordinary amount of exploration. And all of the exploration will only be possible with Starships. Let’s take a look at what we know about space travel with our Starfield Starships Guide.
Starships are a vital part of gameplay – to leave any planet and travel to another you will have to literally fly it through space. Whether your gameplay focus is exploration, the main quest, combat, settling outposts, or even crafting, that progression will require the use of a starship.
While gameplay and reveal trailers have given us a sneak peek at some the systems involved with starships, until the game releases we won’t have a full picture
Players will be able to customize their starship both cosmetically and functionally. Various ship modules will be available for purchase from a variety of ship manufacturers, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Depending on what your main goal is – resource collection, the main quest, building your reputation with a faction, or building outposts – you may wish to prioritize speed over strength, shields over fuel-efficiency, or travel distance over weaponry.
Don’t skimp too badly on the weapons, though. Whether it’s space pirates, corporations, or military groups, there will always be the possibility of running into an unfriendly opponent in the sky. Space combat will likely be a necessary part of the gameplay, if you wish to arrive safely to your next destination.
You will also be able to staff your starship with certain NPCs which you meet in your travels. Whether these individuals are strictly crew NPCs or if they may also double as companions is as yet unknown.
Again, we only know so much about which parts of our starships will be available for customization and upgrading. Here is a list of the module types we have seen so far:
- Largely Decorative Parts
- Fuel Tanks
