The first new intellectual property developed by Bethesda Game Studios in 25 years, Starfield is a hotly anticipated AAA single player, action role playing game which takes place across the vastness of space. Originally scheduled for release in November of this year, the game has been delayed to an as yet unspecified date sometime in the first half of 2023. This space exploration game will have many of the typical Bethesda game hallmarks – a robust main story and side quests, elaborate character creation, and an extraordinary amount of exploration. From previews it’s easy to see that this will be a futuristic setting, but what will Starfield’s Time Period actually be?
Starfield Time Period
Starfield’s story is set to take place in the year 2330 – a distant, but still imaginable future where humanity has developed settlements on other planets. Game Director Todd Howard has stated that the team at Bethesda wanted to keep the game in line with a mostly realistic idea of what human civilization could look like in another 200 or so years.
The developers have said they have put some limits on this type of ‘realism’ however. For example, under some circumstances it would normally be possible for adventurers to run the risk of getting stranded on their starship in the middle of space if they didn’t plan accordingly. Then the gameplay would just stop, as the only actions the player could take would be to send out a distress beacon and sit around and wait to see who may or may not respond.
While there are certainly those who might enjoy a more hardcore, survival mode of gameplay (and in the future they could probably play under such circumstances with the help of the right mod!), for the majority of gamers who would simply want to continue their quest or collecting resources this change was probably the right choice for the developers to make.
